Review: Common punctuation marks

विराम चिह्न लिखित रूप में उचित बंद हो जाता है और निशान लगाने का अभ्यास है। विराम एक वाक्य का अर्थ स्पष्ट करता है। कुछ मामलों में, एक गलत तरीके से इस्तेमाल विराम चिह्न वाक्य के पूरे अर्थ बदल सकते हैं।

इस अनुच्छेद में, हम अंग्रेजी में आम विराम चिह्न की समीक्षा करेंगे।

Full stop

पूर्ण विराम एक बयान, आदेश, अनुरोध या आदेश के अंत में किया जाता है। पूर्ण विराम एक पूरा ठहराव इंगित करता है।

Examples:

• Look here.
• Please help me.
• Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.

The full stop is also used in abbreviations. This is common in American English.

Comma

अल्पविराम एक छोटी थामने इंगित करता है। यह एक सूची में शब्दों को अलग करने के लिए प्रयोग किया जाता है।

• I have planted roses, jasmines, lilies, dahlias and sunflowers in the garden.

Sometimes we use the comma to separate clauses in a sentence.

• After he finished his studies, he went abroad. (Here the comma separates the two clauses.)

 

Colon

पेट के उदाहरणों की एक सूची पेश करने का प्रयोग किया जाता है:

• There are three tenses: the present tense, the past tense and the future tense.
• There are three types of rocks: sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic.

 

Question mark

प्रश्न चिह्न सवालों के अंत में किया जाता है।

• What is your name?
• Where does she work?

 

Exclamation mark

 विस्मयबोधक चिह्न विस्मयादिबोधक शब्द या वाक्य के बाद किया जाता है।

• Alas! We have lost.
• What a lovely picture!

 

Hyphen

हाइफन एक यौगिक शब्द के कुछ हिस्सों को कनेक्ट करने के लिए प्रयोग किया जाता है।

Examples are: living-room, one-man show etc.
Note that hyphens are disappearing. Many compound words are now written as one word with no hyphen between them.

Dash

The dash is sometimes used instead of a colon.
